Jeannie Lewis Sun Certified Java Programmer, March 19, 2003 Open letter to anyone interested in CompInstitute Dear Friend, I think everything happens for a reason. In April of 2002 I was let go from my job in the Real Estate industry in which I had unhappily worked for the past five years. Being let go can be traumatizing but for me it was the best thing that could have ever happened. I was able to collect unemployment and get training for a new career through the TWC. I enrolled in a local college’s continuing ed program to earn a certificate in Unix programming. This was both a blessing and a disappointment. I knew that if I wanted to compete in the programming world with folks who not only had experience but a college education in Computer Science I was going to need more than just a few classes of "Hello World". Now for the blessing, I met Vivek Kush through one of my classes. He told me about CompInstitute and it’s unique coursework. He said, "I tell all my students not to read the book and aim low on the quizzes". No way!!!! This sounded so “out of the box” that I just had to see for myself. I started at CompInstitute in November of 2002, and here it is 14 weeks later and I am proud to say that I am a Sun Certified Java Programmer. The course was challenging and in depth. Vivek’s Memory Box technique is what allowed me to learn at a very deep level in such a short amount of time. Exactly what I knew I needed. You know when I was in my old job I would look through computer how to books thinking I might be able to teach my self and start a new career. Well needless to say those books were about as easy to read as stereo instructions. Written by geeks for geeks and oh so intimidating for us normal people. That’s why Vivek tells his students not to read the book, well not at first. Vivek will pull back the curtain and de-mystify it so normal folks can get a real sense of what programming is. Working with Vivek and Brian was so refreshing and motivating. They both take great pride in seeing their students succeed. Now not only do I have the skills that I need but the confidence that I can hold my own with those "Computer Guys". I’ve told several friends about the school and they are now enrolled at CompInstitute as well. I would be happy to answer your questions about the course through email.
